TK Something BBQ - Canley Vale

The last time I went to TK Something BBQ, it was just starting out - there were about three tables full (we took up two of those tables). So they looked like they were off to a shaky start.

Over a year and a half later, I came back for dinner with some friends and every single table was full. This place was chockers and very popular especially with the younger crowd, sick of the typical / traditional food court eatery that makes up the rest of Canley Vale and Heights.

For those who haven’t been, it’s $29.50 for a 2 hour all you can eat Korean BBQ fest. This also includes your normal drinks (e.g. mugs of tea) and epic DESSERTS (more on that later)!

Some wins for the night:

1. We were misbilled and our bill ended up being $17 each (or $15 each if you don’t count that jug of cranberry juice that we ordered) - SUPER WIN;

2. There was so much MEAT;

3. I had 4 creme brulees. (So much for lecturing my parents about my no sugar diet just last night…);

4. They used one tea bag per mug and kept bringing out more mugs with fresh tea bags in it - not cheap at all!

After going through all that glorious meat (and being the only one to eat some rice and salad, to the disdain of my friends), we headed straight for the dessert bar.

The dessert bar included fruit (rockmelon and watermelon), chocolate mousse, some yoghurt thing, cold sweet dessert soup (where you can add your own toppings such as lychee) and a miscellenous hot dessert soup.

However, the king of the desserts was the creme brulee.

Who doesn’t love that first crack at caramelised, blow-torched sugar layer with a spoon? Or the creaminess of the custardy bit? (If you don’t love it - there’s something really wrong with you).

How good was it? THIS GOOD! x 12 creme brulees. Mmmm.

I think this is the first time ever I haven’t made a loss whilst visiting a buffet type restaurant (fair enough, it was due to a billing error, but still…). It seems like we made our money back just on the 11 creme brulees we had between 3 people.

That my friends, is a cause for celebration!

(By writing a paper on director’s liabilities and Kahn-Freund whilst battling a severe food coma).

Delima, Chinatown

Given that one of my best mates lived in Indonesia for 7 years, I should know a bit more about Indonesian food. The only Indonesian experiences I can recall are when she took me to Ubud near the roundabout in Kingsford and Shalom on Pitt Street; the former being amazing and the latter being lacklustre.

So on Easter Sunday, I ditched my family Easter party in order to head to Delima for a birthday. The first thing I noticed and liked about Delima is how most of the restaurant is divided into private sections, so you can dine without having someone else’s conversations / kids / odours intruding on your own shingdig. I also liked that they had a fish tank at the entrance for all your fresh fish needs. Though it’s a little weird (yet strangely empowering) that you get to pick the fish and then it’s all deep fried and on your plate half an hour later…

Anyway, keep reading if you want to read sweeping generalisations that I make about Indonesian food.

1. Indonesian people really like their chilli, in everything.

“No, it’s not chilli at all” said by an Indonesian person means “your mouth will burn and you won’t be able to recognise flavours for a week” for Non-Indonesians.

2. Indonesians really like their chicken (and I love chicken; woohoo!)

image

Sate Ayam: Chicken satay and peanut sauce.

image

Ayam Panggang Kalasan: Chicken with a sweet and soy based sauce.

image

Ayam Goreng Kalasam: Deep fried chicken with miscellenous crunchy bits on top.

I didn’t get to take a photo of the deep fried chicken with all the chilli surrounding it because it was absolutely gone by the time I doubled back. It was delish (but see point 1)!

3. Indonesians like their sweet and sour flavours

image

Sop Sayur Asam: Old times popular tamarind and light chilli soup

image

Ikan Asam Manis: Sweet and Sour Fish

4. And for no particular reason here are some other photos of stuff we had;

Prawns

Veggie Spring Rolls

We also had the squid, the beef rendang, ox tongue soup and some tofu stuff.

Overall, I liked Delima, it was a good place for the function we had and we had some pretty nice food.

Cafe Ish, Surry Hills

After work on Wednesday, I headed down to Cafe Ish for the 5 course meal with AA. I was quite looking forward to a good night of food and wine, being exhausted from a week filled with work commitments. Far from being a relaxing experience, I felt like I was part of a prank the whole night. It was probably one of the worst dining experiences I’ve had. Here’s why;

1. Cabbage dipped with mayo.

image

I know the new hip thing is to eat food as close to its natural state as possible, but raw cabbage dipped in mayonnaise really perplexed me.

2. The cucumber salad tasted like I was drinking a bowl of fish sauce. It was saturated in fish sauce and it was completely overpowering.

3. The skewers were odd - there was crumbed crocodile (the relatively best of the skewers), really bitter and unpalatable tofu and wagyu beef which was incredibly tough.

4. The Japanese pancake gave my dining companion a massive headache. It was satuarated in oil and cheese.

5. The saving grace was the soft shell crab omlette with rice. It was really flavoursome with avocado salsa , garlic, chilli, soy and ginger sauce. However, I question putting the soft shell crab last. I suggest that the meal should have ended with dessert or something less full on.

6. The tables were so tiny and we had so much food coming out at once, we had to play tetris to move or get rid of the plates on the table, whilst the waitress stood there.

All in all, AA and I left pretty disappointed. I’m not sure how Cafe Ish is for breakfast but I would not recommend Cafe Ish for dinner.

Siorie, Surry Hills

The morning after the weekend of three birthday parties (a pub crawl around Circular Quay, the Piano Room in King’s Cross and at the Meriton), I felt a bit worse for wear. In between a morning class and doing the night shift at work, I called up my friend Tom and we headed up Foveaux Street to get some solids in our bodies and to dissect the weekend. (Apologies in advance for a sub-par quality of the photos taken from my phone).

What I love about Siorie is how cute the restaurant is. It was adorable, it reminds me of a little box. It was also quite full for lunch, so we had to share a table with some other diners, which we didn’t mind doing.

Miso soup, comes with the bento box

image

Tom’s vegetarian bento - it also came with avocado and cucumber sushi. The tofu was lovely as the sauce was so flavoursome.

image

My karaage chicken bento. Best karaage chicken I’ve ever had. (Or at least in the top 3 karaage chicken that I’ve had - it wasn’t too oily and the sauce was kick ass!)

image

Some fresh and tasty salmon sushi.

I also love the different layout of the bento, rather being in the traditional black and red box, it is laid out quite prettily on a plate.

Overall, Siorie provided some good, affordable tucker and a cosy, relaxed atmosphere.

Blu Bar 36 - Shangri La Sydney

These were taken at Blu Bar 36, aptly named as it is located on the 36th Level of Shangri La Sydney. The views were spectacular at night; possibly the best view you can get of the city. Top company and dinner at Jazushi topped off a pretty good night.
